Siemens & Ericsson win 3G supply deal in Italy
By Total Telecom staff

28 June 2001

H3G, the Italian 3G license holder majority owned by Hutchison Whampoa, has selected Ericsson and Siemens, in cooperation with NEC, as its network suppliers.

The Swedish vendor said it will supply the complete core network and part of the radio access network. Siemens, and its 3G partner, NEC, will supply the rest of the radio network.

H3G plans to offer commercial UMTS services in the second half of 2002. The company has said it will invest US$4.8 billion, 75% in its infrastructure, between 2001 and 2005, Reuters reported.

Ericsson, which earlier this week was selected as a supplier by Hutchison's Hi3G consortium in Sweden, said it is now a global partner to the Hong Kong company. It has also won a 3G contract from Hutchison in Australia.

In addition to supplying the core network and some base stations and base station controllers, the Swedish company will set up a 3G services development lab in Milan with H3G.

Siemens' IC Mobile Group said it will supply the first components of the radio network in the fourth quarter of 2001. As part of the deal, it will provide 4,000 base stations covering more than half the network, plus the microwave interconnections.

Siemens and NEC have also won a supply contract from Hutchison 3G U.K.

H3G is 78.3% owned by Hutchison Whampoa. Its other shareholders are: CIR (12.9%), S.Paolo IMI (5%), BMI (2%), HDP (1%), Gemina (0,5%) and Tiscali (0,3%).
