Sure it counts.

I have a similar history for 23 years, but it is unlikely that my employer will ask me to sacrifice my life.

And while I am a former Marine who has never seen combat, which also counts, that is not the same thing as those who have faced the horrors of war, some making the ultimate sacrifice.
