Microsoft was almost taken over by the vacant liberal minds. I was there i seen it, what they did to the industry. I started college in 90 on the mainframes. Took Fortran Cobol Assembly CICS JCL OS Design etc. I worked in the PC lab with a few 8088's running Dos at first. There were no jobs in mainframe then. I majored in Ada, with 18 hours in it. Then came Windows. Then I still couldn't get a job programming or Mainframing and went into Accounting graduate school and finally got a job as MIS Director / ABC Cost Accountant. I implemented the first MRP PC Based system, a UNIX based system collecting data from injection molding machines for job scheduling purposes.

Without the Microsoft based PC, there were no jobs. The only job that company would have had was a Unix position, but then they probably wouldn't have invested in the network except for the fact that everyone used it, not just the machines. It was a beautiful network, too. I did Allen Bradley robotic programming, ladder logic on sorting machines. Burr Brown terminals. Sure all non-Microsoft products. But the spreadsheets, the database reports, the documents, the email, all Microsoft. Microsoft makes mince meat out of data.

That is why they became so dominant. They gave business what business people would use.

As for quality of product, I am running Whistler Server with a 1/2 gig of RAM. Nice ride. Same machine running Linux kept crashing after running Datek's streamer for 30 minutes.
