... the bits must be collected, parity generated, sent, decoded, and parity checked at the other end. This adds a delay for each read that becomes more and more of a problem as chips get faster and a delay of a given length wastes more CPU cycles.

Surely, parity (ECC) calculations only take place in the controller, just like for any other memory. The Rambus channel is not explicitly parity protected unless in combination with the memory itself. Servers tend to use parity memory and desktops usually do not. The benefits and penalties for the use of parity are no different with Rambus memory than any other.
