(Nasdaq: AMAT - news), and Hewlett-Packard Company today announced their participation in Homestretch 2001, an innovative, high school internship program created to provide academically strong students from economically disadvantaged communities with access to technology, exposure to the high-tech industry, and experience working in a corporate environment. Each company will provide summer internships to students from East Palo Alto and East Menlo Park, creating awareness for the high-tech opportunities that exist just outside the students' neighborhoods. ``At Applied Materials we feel it is important for students to acquire the skills they need to participate in the new digital economy and society,'' said Mike O'Farrell, vice president of global community affairs, at Applied Materials, Inc. ``Based on our commitment to enable Information for Everyone(TM) and empowering tomorrow's leaders, Applied Materials is a strong supporter of such programs. By providing valuable role models and business experience to these students, we hope to introduce them to the opportunities that the business world has to offer as they continue their education.'' The Homestretch internship program was created as a result of a call to action to help erase the digital divide by former president Bill Clinton during last year's visit to East Palo Alto. The program was designed by Homestead Technologies Inc., CEO, Justin Kitch, and councilmember and former mayor of East Palo Alto, Sharifa Wilson, to demonstrate what students can achieve by staying in school and pursuing higher education. Of the four incoming seniors who participated in the Homestretch program last year, all were accepted into top universities. ``We created the Homestretch program to open doors for local high school students who might otherwise remain on the other side of the digital divide,'' said Justin Kitch, CEO of Homestead Technologies Inc. ``This year we are thrilled to be working together with Applied Materials and HP to expose these young people to the exciting career opportunities in the technology industry.'' ``HP is pleased to help students from underserved communities build the skills they need to compete in the 21st century workforce through Homestretch,'' says Janiece Evans-Page, e-Inclusion executive, HP Philanthropy and Education. ``Our support for Homestretch is part of the HP Digital Village program in East Palo Alto, which is working to increase collaboration within the community and widen residents' access to educational and economic development opportunities.'' About Homestretch During the course of Homestretch's nine-week program, interns will attend seminars on topics such as applying for college and business writing. The interns will work forty paid hours a week at Homestead, Applied Materials and HP, on job assignments ranging from research and development to quality assurance and marketing. Upon completion of the program, all interns will receive a $1000 scholarship toward higher education and an HP printer, and will participate in a graduation ceremony on August 17.
