Carl,

You seem to forget that we are not trying to correct randomly occurring 1, 2, 3 and 4-bit errors. We are discussing stuck bits on the Rambus channel drivers. This is a special case where a stuck bit will always result in a predictable pattern - the same bit position will be affected in each of the four 18-bit groups.

This greatly simplifies the problem compared to the situation which you describe.
