We are prevented from machine guns, for example. However, machine guns have no non-military function whereas other types of firearms do.

You definitely need to read US vs Miller. The Supreme Court clearly made the point that the military function of the weapon is directly tied to 2nd amendment rights. The military function is a necessary requirement for a well-regulated militia. Specifically, a sawed off shotgun has no military use therefore it is not guaranteed by the 2nd amendment.

"Look, it boils down to this: You want to give up freedom your freedoms for a tiny bit of safety that will soon be overrun. I don't. The second amendment is a clear indicator that we can trust the government. You give up that right, buddy, and you'll soon find you can't. Virtually every incident of genocide has been preceded by disarming the populace. You better think about it long and hard before you give it up."

I always marvel at the gun nuts "the second amendment protects us against the government" nonsense. Can you tell me what you think of Bush and Rummy saying they need at least 18 + billion on top of a 350+ billion defense budget to make us safe from whatever? If the government goes berserk, are your weapons going to save us from a crazed bunch of civil servants or from a military organization that is funded at more than the total of the next 10 countries in the world combined?
