"Why, then, did good churchgoing Christians keep slaves and burn witches, and why did they see no conflict between their beliefs and these actions?"

It's called SIN Steve. The reason they didn't "see" any conflict with their beliefs is the same reason you don't "see" any evidence for God, you don't want to. Christ said to some in His day
"If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains."

You pride yourself on your open mind but it is closed. You are blind to God but you claim to see clearly that he does not exist. You are only deluding yourself, and the consequence of your willful blindness is inescapable.

<><Regarding the Old Testament, you are seriously mis-characterizing what it teaches><>

"How? Has some scholar discovered that the words which have always been translated as "smite" and "slay" actually meant "hug" and "kiss"? If your local religious intermediary told you to slay the unbelievers and grab their land, would you do it? If you are an old testament believer, you'd better."

Was it you that recently said you had no problem removing a tumor? The truth is that God removed those people from the land as an act of judgement on them for among other things sacrificing children to idols. God gave a specific piece of land to Israel. where does the bible teach that Israel could go and slaughter anyone they wanted to? It does not. God has the prerogative to do what He wants. Are you saying it was wrong? Sounds absolute to me. The old Testament believer had a pillar of smoke in the day and a column of fire by night to verify that what they were being told was indeed from God. Jesus rose from the dead. What's your authority? Your subjective feelings?

"there have been major improvements in the last few centuries, and there is hope that the improvement will continue."

You have got to be joking. The last centuries since the so called enlightenment have been the most bloody in History.

At least I admit to thinking God is right and your wrong. Yet you do not see the same level of surety in your own position. The one thing you apparently do know is that I am wrong. Frankly, I don't think your being honest. That's what I meant, by saying what I did about you making absolute statements. X thinks she can condemn bullies, but not Nazis, and you think you can be dogmatic about not believing in dogma. Seems a tad inconsistent to me.

"therefore everybody ought to stop believing what they believe and start believing what you believe."
Yes, I see quite clearly that is what you believe
