But the point is that women here are not beaten for expressing themselves. Women here are allowed to behave as they wish. If they would like to live under a veil that have every right to do so, if they do not wish to, they do not have to. It would be impossible to know if crime in Kabul is less than here. I doubt their reporting of crimes is very good. I, as a relativist, believe the Afghan people have a right to self destiny. I even think they have every right to blow up the statues in their country- just as the Chinese had every right to destroy their cultural heritage. But just as in China, it is almost impossible to get a handle on the large scale repression in a society where xenophobia is at such a fever pitch. You think you know Afghans. But you know Afghans here. BFD. There is a world of difference between ex-patriots and the actual residents of a country. You might be right about the population of Afghanistan, and then again you might not. With the wholesale repression there, it would be impossible for you to find the truth. Most people will not tell the truth, when the truth may get them killed.

I am not disputing any of this. The complaints are there, they are real, they are documented...

...you are full of crap

If we agree that the complaints are real and documented, in what way am I full of crap? For believing that this is a very bad thing for a government to do to its people - even if those people are not "typical"?

You'd be surprised at the number of Afghans we have here. Lots of refugees come to the Philippines. It's cheap to live here, and there's no nonsense about proving that you're persecuted. You slip a few bucks to the folks at immigration, they give you a student visa, and you're in. It's become a tradition. When the mad ayatollah was sending every young man he could get his hands on to the war against Iraq, we had thousands of young Iranian men hiding out here, mostly from urban middle class families. They were sent here to keep them out of the meatgrinder. Now we have Afghans, and not surprisingly, many are women in their 20s and 30s, from middle class families in the towns and cities. You should come over and talk to them about the Taleban. But maybe they aren't "typical" Afghans, and if they aren't "typical", why shouldn't they be beaten and held in confinement? The only ones who have problems are the uppity ones who won't do as they are told, right?

Odd how a country where Catholic fundamentalism is so well entrenched, and where Muslims are so thoroughly feared (a relic of the Spanish occupation) should become a refuge for those fleeing Islamic fundamentalism.

you are taking a real life tragedy and using not to aid them in there struggles but to advance your own selfish purposes

Pardon my ignorance, but what selfish puropse am I advancing?
