Well, you get the gist. I'm sure looking back, he'd have rather been in bonds earning 6% a year than have a loss after 5 years. That's why high beta portfolios can look spectacular 90% of the time and kill you in that 10% of the time that they aren't performing spectacularly. It's better to have slow but steady growth over time. At least that's the way I've played it and am glad I wasn't didn't take risks with all my money.
