TREASURY SECRETARY O'NEILL SEES GOLDEN AGE COMING U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill believes the country is on the verge of a "golden age" of prosperity. Although he acknowledged that "doom and gloom" is easy enough to find throughout the economy, several factors make O'Neill optimistic about the future. He said that the investment sector is going through a necessary period of adjustment after its prolonged over-expansion. Despite the slowdown that this adjustment period has caused, consumer spending remains quite strong. O'Neill's outlook for the economy is also buoyed by the fact that the effects of this year's aggressive Federal Reserve interest rate cuts have yet to kick in. He is confident that once these take hold, the economy will move into a period of sustained growth. TODD'S TAKE: These are pretty bold words from a senior member of the Bush Administration, especially considering how many economists are now whispering the "R-word." In fact, some are even saying the U.S. is already in a recession! Whether the country is or isn't, we're siding with O'Neill when it comes to looking at the future. We agree that the Fed rate cuts have yet to take hold, and we think the tremendous drop in interest rates will kick start a period of solid growth in the U.S. near the end of this year, or possibly in early 2002. We don't expect sparks to fly on the markets over the summer, but as a leading indicator of where things are going, we do expect the markets to pick up steam in the winter months. We're even more confident after hearing what the Fed had to say yesterday. In the meantime, the summer months could present some excellent buying opportunities for the long-term investor. As always, The Bull Market Report will be right here to arm you with the best advice for how to profit from this impending economic resurgence. Stay tuned. =====================================
