Gergen knows more in his little pinky than the 2 playing in the white house today..................DAVID GERGEN Commentator, editor, teacher, public servant and advisor to Presidents -- for a quarter of a century, David Gergen has been an active participant in American national life. As well as being a regular conversationalist on the NewsHour, David currently serves as editor at large at U.S. News and World Report. In addition, he is a regular visiting professor at Duke University and is writing a book on presidential leadership in the late 20th Century. His return to private life came in January, 1995, after he served for a year as Counselor to the President and then for six months as Special Advisor to the President and the Secretary of State. His service in the Clinton White House was his fourth tour there. He had previously spent 8 years in the White House as an advisor to Presidents Nixon, Ford and Reagan. From 1984 - 1993, David worked mostly as a journalist. He teamed up with Mark Shields every Friday night for five years for discussion and analysis of the week's events. The two were popular political analysts and won numerous accolades for their political coverage. During that same period, he was editor of U.S. News. Working with Mort Zuckerman, the chairman and editor-in-chief, he helped to overhaul the staff and saw the magazine enjoyed record gain in circulation and advertising. He became editor-at-large in 1988. A native of Durham, North Carolina, he is an honors graduate of both Yale University (A.B., 1963) and Harvard Law School (LLB, 1967). He is a member of the D.C. bar. In addition, he served for three and a half years in the U.S. Navy, where he was posted for some two years to a ship home ported in Japan. In addition to his active participation on a number of non-profit boards, he is a frequent lecturer both in the United States and overseas. He holds honorary degrees from four universities and last spring, upon the request of students and faculty, gave the commencement address at Duke University. He has been married since 1967 to Anne Gergen of England. They have two children, Christopher, now a graduate student at George Washington University, and Katherine, a senior at Yale. They live in MacLean, Virginia.
