"What's different about Afghanistan?"

Lots. For starters women have the "right" to have their needs provided for equal to the men of the home. Its not a recommendation, it is enforceable. For example, when a man purchases clothing he is required to purchase outfits for his wife on an equal basis. The woman inherits from the family fortune on the death of her parents. She inherits only half of what her brother does, in most cases, but she is not required to spend on the home and the men are forbidden to compel her to spend her money in any way she doesn't want to. Likewise if a woman marries, the man has to give her money that is hers and there are no obligations for spending that money. No woman should be fairing less well materialistically than the men; and I don't see that as one of the typical complaints. Are there abuses? Of course; just like everywhere else in the world. However, women are the center of the home culture and the sisterhood of the community is very strong. Men are required to announce their arrival home and cannot enter without the woman's say so. So, it would be very rare for a woman to become isolated like some of the fundamentalists here. Well, that is for starters; it is a very rich culture of rules rights and obligations.

"The only thing different here since the women's lib movement is that, when women are laborers, they can labor at interesting and well compensated jobs." ...Whether they want to or not.

There is now a disability (recognized in some regions) in which a woman must be accomodated by barriers at work. It seems, some women are so intimidated by working in an environment with men that they suffer psychological harm. I suspect that had something to do with the advent of our lovely cubes.

E'en so, I like it here much better.
