U.S. manufacturing contracted for an 11th straight month in June, but a pick up in activity raised hopes the recession-plagued sector may be clawing out of its slump, a report showed on Monday.

The National Association of Purchasing Management's (NAPM) monthly manufacturing index rose to 44.7 in June -- its highest reading this year -- from 42.1 in May, compared with a decade low of 41.2 hit in January.
