I disagree. The tug-'o-war over file extensions is nothing new and has little to do with nefariousness on MSFT's part. Plenty of third-party image software will quietly commandeer extensions like .jpg and .gif without asking as part of installation. MSFT products in general are very well behaved in this area. For example, as a Eudora user I appreciate that when Outlook Express launches it asks me if I would like OE to be my default e-mail program and then respects my wishes when I tell it "no" and doesn't bother me further on the subject. Internet Explorer similarly is happy to launch Eudora rather than OE when I click a "mailto" hyperlink because it has been designed to accommodate other non-MSFT programs. And applying service doesn't change these settings. Of course, Eudora has good programmers who know how to use the Windows APIs to create a Windows product. Sadly, that has not been my experience with Quicktime, which seemingly can't be bothered with pretending it's not running on a Mac.
