"If you have a more flattering explanation, I'd be interested in hearing it."

"...bunch of unwashed troglodytes grabbing power... I'm assuming you know some of the recent history of Afghanistan. They were supported by the US to oust the Russian occupation. We figured they would be great allies after that. We would help them to redifine their (society) to a western democracy as apposed to communism. There was some revolutionary upheaval, however, and Afghanistan became a zone controlled by regional war lords trying to redefine the culture. Most of them pushing an Islamic idealism. It was all too unsettled and unfriendly for us to enter into any kind of diplomatic liason. Very recently it became the haven for the extreme militant muslims of the world. The Taleban is a fundamental Islamic society that rejects all things forbidden in an Islamic society and pushes all things encouraged. Where as, Islam requires tolerance of diversity and religion, the Taleban seems to be making exception to this at least within Afghanistan's borders and for the time being. The Taleban also seems to have united the waring factions of the country.

This region has been in the path of invading hords, criss crossing the planet since ancient times. They could just continue to allow themselves to don the garb of the occupying empire of the decade or they could do something drastic. It looks like they've opted for the latter. I know Afghans on both sides. They are very sweet people when having tea but would stand and fight to the death over a parking space.

Guess I'm not much of a flatterer.
