Dune and Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time", which is marginally better (Dune starts to go downhill after a point ... like by the second book). But my point was that they both contain secretive groups of women (Bene Gesserit in Dune and Aes Sedai in WoT) whose primary function is to influence the development of history into a direction they desire. They do this usually by political manipulation, which is not too difficult since in both cases the group is highly sought after by royalty and political leaders for their particular talents and their advisement.

But the thing is, even though their methods tend to ultimately backfire due to infighting or overconfidence, the methods do work in theory.

That said, I'm probably a big fan of the Wachowski movie to which Tench alludes. It was certainly better than that weenie Midichlorian film.
