I didn't know they had photography when Aztecs roamed the earth. It's a bit sad really, there they are, hoping that their self-sacrifice will help the Thailand central bank help Thailand's economic recovery. It won't do any such thing but I'm sure the bosses of the central bank will enjoy spending it on some first class trips to a world banking jamboree. 13.6 million baht = HK$2.3million = approxNZ$600,000 = US$240,000 and that's going to save Thailand's economy? It wouldn't save my personal economy. But hang on, they say there are 55 gold bars [but they only show a 8 x 3 layout of bars by the look of it]. Those bars are hard to check the size of [no scale for comparison] but they look about the size of a pound of butter. They must contain at least 5 kg each or 10 pounds = 160 ounces. Say they are 100 ounces each, that's 55,000 ounces x $200 per ounce = US$10 million Somebody has their numbers badly wrong. Somebody should count the gold bars again as I think some have been misappropriated if they only got HK$2.3million for 55 gold bars. My gold density figures are just guesses, but I don't think I'm out too much. It really does seem weird to see actual humans worshipping at an altar covered in gold like some cargo-cult baying at the gods to deliver them from their penury. As you say, humans and their emotions can lead to very weird and ugly outcomes which can drag us all into the mire, especially those leveraged into any collapse. If they had all spent time making something useful, instead of digging up gold, making it into baubles, melting it down again, giving it to a bank which will then bury it again in a vault somewhere, then spending more time praying, their economy would actually get somewhere. Digging holes and filling them in again is not the road to wealth. Mqurice PS: 3 Cool Posts out of 5 right now for you, CB and me. Do we get money [gold is okay too]? Edit... I now see the previous poster spotted the mistake in the Aztec photo. Also, the 3 cool posts were mentioned [but no request for payment]. Cobalt Blue, I fear I am nuts so I keep a paranoid eye out for evidence that I am. So far, my main mistakes come from assuming I am and others aren't [such as my finally buying a huge lump of Globalstar, even though I thought their business plan couldn't work as claimed - I believed their claims that things were going okay; they were nuts!!] Jay, your fake derivatives collapse post had a bit of a warning attached before we read it, so I thought 'What's this?'. Perhaps because of that, I read it quickly with equanimity. LTCM has been and gone at a time when a lot was stacked up ready to crumble. We came through that with flying colours. I assume that derivatives collapses will happen slowly enough that assets will change hands, the losers will get jobs and markets will rebalance.
