Re:"So the question is, why should the industry need a new standard architecture at all?"

Are you really a graduate engineer as your profile says? If so, you really don't understand technology very well. You should ask for your money back.

The X86 instruction set has a lot of baggage that includes segmented memory among the major problems. The introduction of a new instruction set allows the design of a processor using a clean slate -- without the X86 baggage.

A huge effort is required to develop the infrastructure to support the new instruction set but Intel has made that happen. Application software that takes advantage of the new IA64 technology is growing fast and will continue to increase. The software to operate the Itanium systems in the initially targeted server markets is available NOW.

At the same time, Intel included the ability to run the X86 application in the IA64 architecture by designing a dual instruction capability. An IA64 OS will direct the X86 instructions to a separate unit. The result is a processor that can run 2 instruction sets.

Oh yes DickWad, thanks for the private message that you did not have enough courage to post on the AMD God thread.

BrushDUD - Re: "So the question is, why should the industry need a new standard architecture at all? "

Let me guess - because AMD didn't come up with a new standard architecture, nobody needs one - right?

Too bad Compaq, Dell, IBM, HP, SGI and Gateway don't believe your pathetic bullsh!t !
