Itanium does less than 400 SPEC int on heavily optimized code. The "old" instruction set in Athlon and "mostly old" P4 instruction set both beat it without requiring a gigantic chip that burns something like 140 watts.

McKinley, generally accepted to be the first of the high production Itaniums, fixes that in spades, while even improving already great floating point. Current Itanium is a software and other development platform. The big ITanium bucks start coming in next year.

Blow Hard Dan - Re: "The itanium ISA was an interesting idea that doesn't seem to have panned out. "

No kidding?

Do you recall - from just last week - a rather big announcement from Compaq?
