"The Accordion Crimes" is episodic, it doesn't really have any common characters through the sections beside the forlorn eponymous instrument. I love that word. The theme is, approximately, the grim underside of the immigrant experience, sort of "Wisconsin Death Trip" on a broader canvas. Proulx is a great, lyrical writer, but this one has a far blacker tone than "The Shipping News". Which was black enough in parts, but "Accordion" is sort of like pure Quoyle ancestry.
