After The Bell - Apple falls, tech shares inch higher
NEW YORK, July 2 (Reuters) - Apple Computer Inc.(NasdaqNM:AAPL - news) slipped amid light volume in extended trading on Tuesday after the personal computer maker said it would stop making its Power Mac G4 cube-shaped computer indefinitely because of low demand.

Apple's decline offset gains in benchmark technology shares after the bell. Cisco Systems Inc.(NasdaqNM:CSCO - news) rose to $19.23 from a close of $19.19 on Nasdaq and Intel Corp. inched up to $30.49 from its $30.46 close. The Nasdaq 100 after-hours indicator was up 0.08 percent.

Check Point Software Technologies Ltd.(NasdaqNM:CHKP - news) rose to $45.28 in extended trading, paring a 13 percent plunge during regular trade after the maker of software to protect data networks from hackers forecast lower-than-expected revenues. Analysts cited the slowing economy for the miss.

Overall trading volume was light, with 23 million shares changing hands on Nasdaq's extended trading system.

Apple dropped to $23.51 on electronic brokerage Island, from a close of $23.84. The company said it will abandon production of its ultramodern G4 cube because it never became a hit among the creative professionals at whom it was aimed.

Apple said there was a small chance it would reintroduce an upgraded model but had no plans to do so.

The stock market closed slightly lower on Tuesday's holiday-shortened session. Markets will also be closed on Wednesday for the July 4 U.S. Independence Day holiday.
