John,

<< MSM multi-mode chipset uses the exact same GSM core as NOK uses; that answers the question! >>

Say what?

In all due respect, NOK (or TI) are not close to announcing the components that will be used for NOK's multimode GSM/GPRS/WCDMA chipsets, which will (according to Nokia's current guidance) ship commercially Q3 2002, with volume in Q4, all subject to the good Lord willing.

We are all assuming that Nokia will use (and be the first user of) TI's recently announced GPRS Class 12 wireless handsets chipset - the TBB2100 digital baseband which is built upon a dual-core architecture, including a high-performance TI TMS320C54x DSP and an ARM RISC processor.

Likewise, I have not seen any deep detail on the core components for the MSM6xxx family that will include GSM/GPRS/WCDMA (6200), or the GSM/GPRS with IS95A/1xRTT (6300), or the GSM/GPRS with IS95A/1xRTT/1xEV (6500), or finally at long last the chip Vodafone is waiting for which will allow me to roam worldwide with GSM/GPRS and IS95A/1xRTT/WCDMA (6600).

<< that answers the question! >>

Failing my point above ... and supposing they do use the same component or components, that answers no question, John. A component is a component. Nokia designs specifications for TI to build to. That surely is not going to Qualcomm.

Not meaning to be contentious here ... I'm in festive sprits today since the 2 companies I hold in my wireless port have reached an important milestone.

Happy 4th.
