A. A political order whose head of state is not a monarch and in modern times is usually a president.....a nation having such a form of government.
B. A government in which supreme power resides in a body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised elected officers and representatives responsible to them and governing according to law......a nation having such a form of government.

And from the the American Heritage Dictionary...
republic....1. any political order that is not a monarchy. 2. A constitutional form of government, especially a democratic one. 3 Any group of people working freely and equally for the same clause.
