<<How about shale rock, wind power, solar energy, and water energy for starters.....all have tremendous potential and don't deplete the underground oil reserves......and don't forget propane and ethanol.>>

Shale rock is another source of oil, still burning a fossil fuel there. The oil industry has been working on ways to extract oil from shale for years but it's not economical yet. Most of our shale lies under our national monuments out west and you'd piss off Scumbria and the other environmentalists if you mined the shale.

Water is great but you need water that has a lot of speed or a large fall to generate power. It's great out in the Rocky Mountains or down in TVA land but most of the US is too flat and doesn't get enough rain. To generate power you also need dams which piss off the environmentalists.

Wind and solar aren't consistent enough in most areas and they both require the ability to store the power that's generated.

Ethanol? Geez, I've been saying we need to use more ethanol. We need more ethanol producing plants and that is done by private industry. To get that done there has to be a financial motivation to build more plants and that has to come from the Senate. You might want to read some of the screams from California posted here about their resistance to switching to ethanol.
