(* Pascal was all the rage. *)

I had Pascal rammed down my throat in school too. At the time I thought it was a wonderful language.

Then came ADA. ADA, the government mandated language was about to hit the computer world like some giant tidal wave and wash all other computer languages away. (* Disco, 8-track, bell-bottoms, and ADA -- Visit your local landfill *)

My first job was programming in FORTRAN. My second job was programming in Pascal, and in the third, I used COBOL.

/* I now use C exclusively. */

; Except for a little MASM.

This experience has left me a bit cynical when I hear of something new sweeping all that has gone before. At first, I thought Windows was an interesting novelty, but over time, I see that Windows offers users compelling benefits at reasonable cost. This, coupled with great marketing, has enabled Windows to succeed. As time goes by, it becomes even more difficult to dislodge Windows from its enviable position. If this is to happen, it will take a giant leap in functionality, reliability, and convenience coupled with spectacular marketing. Currently, I see no credible threats.

Linux and open standards will replace Windows just like Windows replaced DOS and proprietary Unix.
