Earnings and revenues continue to be ugly in almost all sectors of technology. The key question is: When will spending bounch back? Since the economy seems to have avoided a recession I believe that spending will resume in the fourth quarter as companies seek to spend their budgets before year end. The third quarter earnings will likely indicate which companies are gaining market share.

Some new on the portal front:

SAP Portals Announces Strategic Alliance with Baan
Baan Customers Will Be Able To Leverage Latest Developments in Portal Technology and Extend Integration and Collaboration Across the Enterprise

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 3, 2001-- SAP Portals, Inc., a provider of enterprise information portals and business intelligence products and wholly owned subsidiary of SAP AG (NYSE:SAP - news), and Baan, a global provider of B2B collaborative commerce solutions, have announced a strategic alliance that will enable Baan customers to quickly and easily integrate disparate software applications into the iBaan Portal.

Under the terms of the alliance, technology from SAP Portals will be embedded within the iBaan Portal solution, and Baan will participate in the advisory board of SAP Portals.

This alliance with Baan follows SAP Portals' recently announced strategy to develop an open partnership model that fosters a broad technology and content ecosystem. Baan is part of the Invensys Software Systems division of Invensys plc, the global automation and controls group. This alliance with SAP Portals builds on Baan's recent launch of iBaan.

``By forming this alliance with Baan, we are delivering on a vision to introduce open, widely distributed portal solutions that integrate seamlessly with enterprise applications, empowering customers to collaborate effectively,'' said Hasso Plattner, co-chairman of the executive board, CEO and co-founder of SAP AG. ``SAP Portals will deliver an open, innovative enterprise portal and information platform that quickly improves the bottom line for our customers.''

Laurens van der Tang, president of Baan, added, ``Our component-based architecture allows us to serve our customers with open and integrated solutions. We've had a long-standing partnership with SAP Portals, formerly TopTier Software, and its enterprise portal solutions work extremely well with our iBaan suite of products. We believe that it is in the interest of our customers to deliver a portal solution that has broad acceptance in the market and integrates with many applications, and therefore, we embraced the opportunity to work with SAP in this area.

``Earlier this year, we launched our new iBaan suite of Internet-enabled collaboration solutions, further strengthening our drive to become the only organization to offer real-time Internet-enabled solutions for manufacturing environments. The iBaan Portal solution, powered by SAP Portals, is a key component of our solution that gives networked employees direct access to all the information, applications and business processes needed for day-to-day decision-making and execution,'' van der Tang said.

The new iBaan suite of Internet-enabled collaboration solutions addresses manufacturers' growing demands for tighter integration and full visibility across their entire supply chains. The suite combines proven Baan technology with significant new developments that enable customers to take significant steps toward the seamless integration of systems and processes, provide end users with personalized and easy-to-use information, and empower businesses to collaborate with their customers and suppliers over the Internet.

The SAP Portals portfolio includes enterprise portals, business intelligence applications, unique content offerings and professional services. Enterprise portal offerings are composed of SAP Portals' Enterprise Information Portal, SAP Portals' Enterprise Collaboration Portal and SAP Portals' Enterprise Unification Portal. These products offer industry-leading cross-product integration, a dynamic user interface and the most innovative design and function within a portals product.
