My mother in law, a former English teacher, is a great reader of contemporary literature, and hasn't read a "classic" in the past 30 years. What I find intersting is how differently she and I read books -- she reads, as you seem to, for voice, with interest in the author and the book as a window to the author's mind. I read almost entirely without interest in the author's life, but first for pure pleasure, and second for what the book tells me about the interactions of human lives with each other and their social environments and how they act under various circumstances, including times of stress. And also, frankly, to meet more interesting people than I tend to meet in my daily life. Or at least people in whose lives it is easier to become interested and who are much less demanding friends.

My literature friends never ask to borrow my lawnmower--and if they did, I'm sure would return it without my having to go over and retrieve it. LOL!
