I went to a local college so I wasn't far from home. I remember my mother getting a little upset when during Christmas dinner, 1969, I announced I had volunteered for the draft the day before and was leaving in the afternoon of Jan. 1 1970. Spending the cold night in Chicago at the YMCA waiting for the morning bus to Fort Leonard Wood made me upset. You know we both lived through it.

Think how proud you will be when both boys come home for Christmas with their wives and children and have good careers. It's growth. Gotta love it.

Thanks, Penni. It has, in fact, been a lovely summer, spending time in New York, at the beach, and in Washington for the Fourth. My son is, in fact, a rising senior, and I am turning 45 next Saturday. Sometimes I am baffled by this turn of events.....
