Tim : this possibility is EXACTLY what I see: the consumer has still not slowed down spending. It is most likely not possible for spending to continue unabated while debt is increasing, people are losing their jobs, and capital spending by large companies is being reduced. I too believe we are in for a much much worse bear in the next couple of years. Should we ever have a rally (and the summer rally certainly has not materialized imo) I believe a very sharp downturn will follow. Someday we will have a bull market again but I think it is not so close.
Of course some stocks will do well anyway...that's why I ve investigated mutual funds for hours on end and chosen a few I think do well in all markets (not great in bull markets but ok and also ok in bear markets).
For stocks? I'm still looking...perhaps some health sectors, I dunno.
