I spent some time in England and Scotland a decade ago, and remember being told, at the time, that the U.K. was in the process of becoming more European. Perhaps they haven't succeeded. London is still considered the financial hub of Europe though, so there must be some merit in characterizing the U.K. as European, no? One can see France from England across the English Channel. Indeed the two countries are relatively close together geographically, yet appear to be separated by an unbridgeable chasm culturally.
