That was a thoughtful article.

It seems that there are two issues: Firstly, there is an abstract concept that standards of "punishment" should be equal. However, they are not--they are unequal; and the visceral desire of people everywhere is that they remain unequal. Secondly, what should the standard of "punishment" be; and how does this relate to the "goal" of punishment, or justice?

What is it we, as society, wish to accomplish? And what human attributes motivate us to adjust the stretch of the rack?

I didn't say that it was depressing. Though it certainly was. I didn't see any humor in a Mother and a Father neglecting their children so much that a very high percentage of them died. What was it 4 or 5? I seriously did not read one bit of it that made me crack the slightest smile. Maybe it would have happened had I read the whole thing. But the writing style, along with the subject matter did not hold my interest.

On the Yates murders, one of the most tragic events that I have ever heard about. However, that is about as far as I want to dive into the discussion.

We would also respond very differently to the Yates situation, I think, if it were the male who had snapped and killed his kids. How much sympathy would HE be getting??
