All good questions. Perhaps the answer lies more with who people vote against than who they vote for. Most of my dem friends always vote against the republican candidate. For myself, I don't have any great love of republicans, but I detest the democrat party.

Talk about antithetical! I don't know how the environment got to be a liberal issue. There's not an issue much more conservative than preservation and conservation of our natural heritage. Why was freedom of speech abandoned by the liberals? I never understood how big business and protectionism could coexist in the GOP, but it seems that protectionism has now been booted to the far left. And the extreme left fighting against progress in food production? The conservatives are supposed to be cautious. <<

Follow the money.

Not necessarily. I am libertarian and just a touch of a social conservative. Although perhaps that "just a touch" is important, and I became less socially conservative and more libertarian during the same period of time. (In my mid to late twenties). You can believe in socially conservative ideas without feeling the need to impose them over others by using government force.

I don't know how the environment got to be a liberal issue. There's not an issue much more conservative than preservation and conservation of our natural heritage.

National parks and a basic level of respect for the environment might be conservative but IMO the extent which environmental laws and regulations have worked there way through so much of our lives is not a conservative respect for our tradition of limited government.

Why was freedom of speech abandoned by the liberals?

Depends on which liberals you are talking about. There are still liberals who are strong defenders of freedom of speech, but I do get the feeling that the a number of liberal groups have moved or are moving away from a strong defense of the freedom of speech.

I have to wonder about people who buy either party hook, line, and sinker.

I would wonder a bit too if they buy either parties line completely without any reservations (particuarly the people who will change their line when the line of their party changes), but then I have never voted for anyone but a Republican candidate in a national election. I do have problems with some issues that the Republicans push like the "war on drugs" (but then a lot of Democrats push for it too), I also have a problem where the Republicans are weak on the issues where we do agree, but no other significant party is remotely close to my views. I suppose I could vote for a fiscally conservative, pro-life, anti-gun control Democrat but I don't see too many of them.
