There is now a new technique for in-vitro fertilization that is much better at pre-selecting for gender. The process is used for selecting purely for personal preference. Some couples want a girl to dress up. One man wanted a son to pass his vineyard on to.

Is this an ethical issue for the left? Or does reproductive freedom encompass the right to select for gender if that's what a couple wants?

Interestingly, to me at least, so far more girls have been selected for than boys. This would, presumably, be different in other cultures. But if a couple in a one-child country would be likely to illegally (and unsafely) abort a female fetus is it better to let them select for a male up front?

Is this another step toward Brave New World, or simply a sidelight reproductive rights, since it is unlikely, given the cost, to be used by more than a very few people?
