John
I was reading and wondering about market share as well. I hope that Jerry would not go after asp at the expense of market share in the 3q.

Petz - you really think so? I think it's apparent they've gained market share because they've dropped their pants. In a personal vendetta to screw Intel. Not a smart way to do business.

Petz, there was one funny discrepancy on revenues in the reuters story, at nytimes.com anyway.

Sales fell 17 percent from the first quarter, to $985 million, compared to the firm's
previous forecast of a drop of up to 10 percent.

Analysts expected revenue of $1.02 billion in the quarter ended July 1. AMD is
scheduled to report its second-quarter results on July 12.

I assume the $1.02 billion revenue forecast is just wrong.

In the real world there's no such thing as guaranteed contracts -- not when revenues are collapsing by 50% in the Comm Sector. Live and learn.

Do you think AMD would have done better not to have tried to make long term contracts at all? They could have had better earnings a year ago, but I think that they must have at least minimal help from the contracts now. They might have a slight loss this Q without these contacts.

The CPU news is not that bad because the market would have applauded gaining market share. In the long run
it's a better strategy.

Perhaps but they have given up a lot of ASP for their market share gain. And ASPs seem to go down easier then up.
