Korean-Built Cars' Average Export Price Exceeds US$8,000

2001-06-05 :

For the first time, the average export price of Korean-built cars exceeded US$8,000 at a time when Korean companies are struggling to get rid of their
image as low-end car makers, according to the Korea Automobile Manufacturers
Association (KAMA).

During the first four months of this year, Korea exported a total of 495,329 cars valued at US$3.99 billion. It means free on board (FOB) price of US$8,074 per car.

Last year, Korea shipped 498,397 cars during the same period and the export amount totaled US$3.47 billion with per-unit price of US$6,964, showing a 15.9% increase in terms of export price.

As the distribution cost is over 30% of their export price, industry analysts estimated that the average retail price of Korean cars in overseas markets at more than US$10,000.

Also, it is noteworthy that the percentage of recreational vehicle out of the nation's total car shipments soared to 20% last year from a meager 5% in 1998.
