S+L debacle - major Reagan crony push for passage of Garnes-St. Germaine act. That bill alone made it all happen. After that the Bush folks led the cover-up, but some Dems like Wright and Cranston must share some blame as well. Texas and Louisiana Democrats in particular were in on it as well. Dems also share blame for not making it more of an issue. For sitting there and letting it happen. They were not responsible stewards. Almost 90% of S+L campaign contributions during those years went to the GOP over the Dems. They were in charge. They should have been regulating. Instead they removed regulation and let the pigs feed at the trough for years and years. Each year another hundred billion or more from tax-payers. Charles Keating may have bribed Cranston as democrat but he's a conservative right-wing republican. Fits the profile. Silverado, all the Texas banks, all the prime offenders in bed with the GOP and showeing them with soft money. Many dems joined in later just to keep up with the fundraising.
The Whitewater scandal was a joke. That was teensy tiny stuff. The big offenders were Reagan cronies paying as they went. Juyst like the energy companies and HMO's are now.
