Team president Dean Spanos sounds like he's lost patience with the former TCU star halfback's camp. "We've offered $10.5 million to somebody who hasn't done a thing yet," he said in the Aug. 19 edition of the North County Times. "I'm sorry, but that is more than fair." Tomlinson, the draft's fifth overall pick, missed his second preseason game Saturday. According to Spanos, it's doubtful Tomlinson will play next Saturday -- or the one after that. "I think it's going to be a while," said Spanos, who believes accepting Tomlinson on his terms will torpedo the organization. "It's not wanting to spend the money, but you can't put your team in jeopardy three or four years from now when you have huge incentives that turn into escalators.
