Eunice Kennedy Shriver hospitalized after head-on collision on Cape Cod

By Boston.com Staff and Globe Wire Services, 07/06/01

HYANNIS - Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the sister of Senator Edward Kennedy and the late President Kennedy, is recovering in a Cape hospital this morning after a head-on car collision.

Shriver, 79, was in good condition at Cape Cod Hospital, where she underwent surgery following the accident yesterday afternoon, said hospital spokeswoman Deborah Dougherty. Shriver also suffered some minor cuts to her forehead.

The accident happened yesterday around 3 p.m. on Route 28 in Hyannis.

Police said Shriver was heading west on Route 28 when she collided head-on with a truck that pulled out of a side road in front of her 1986 Jeep Cherokee.

Witnesses on local radio reported seeing her head bounce off the windshield of her vehicle.

The truck's driver, Jonathan Swearinger, 20, of Marianna, Fla., was cited for making an illegal turn. Swearinger was living on Cape Cod for the summer, playing baseball for the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape League. He was not injured.

"He felt bad," police Sgt. Sean Sweeney said. "He said, I just didn't see the signs."

Shriver was cited for not wearing her seatbelt and for driving an unregistered vehicle. The registration had expired in March.

Born in 1921, Shriver is the daughter of Joseph P. Kennedy and Rose E. Fitzgerald. She is the sister to late President John F. Kennedy, US-Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, and the late Robert F. Kennedy.

Shriver, whose sister Rosemary is mentally retarded, organized the first Special Olympics in 1968 in Chicago. Her husband, R. Sargent Shriver, was the founding director of the Peace Corps and the Democratic vice presidential candidate in 1972.

She had recently recovered from a severe infection following surgery to remove a benign pancreatic tumor. She spent seven weeks in the hospital and was released in December.
