Strong Energy Sales Offset Cutbacks,
Help Alcoa Top Analysts' Estimates

A WALL STREET JOURNAL ONLINE News Roundup

PITTSBURGH -- Alcoa Inc. reported better-than-expected second-quarter earnings, as energy sales helped to offset lower aluminum prices, weakness in the automotive-products industry and production cutbacks in the Pacific Northwest
...........................................................................................................................
"These are outstanding results, particularly in the face of lower prices for alumina and aluminum ingot; continuing market weakness in passenger automotive, truck trailer and industrial products in the U.S.; and curtailment of smelting and refining production," Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Alain Belda said in a prepared statement. Alcoa said revenue from the sale of power continued to cover the financial losses related to production cutbacks in the Pacific Northwest. The aluminum company has been idling smelters in the region because of high energy prices and reselling its unused electricity for big profits on the spot market, or back to power producers
