This is almost a mirror image of the first and second quarter of last year when everyone was saying the sky's the limit and things will keep getting better," said Subodh Kumar, chief portfolio strategist at CIBC World Markets. "I think the first and second quarter of this year will be the low point for earnings."

Investors took little solace that the surprise plunge in U.S. jobs gives the Federal Reserve more room to cut interest rates in coming months. The Fed has already cut rate six times so far this year in a bid to revive the world's largest economy.

"There is room to cut another 75 basis points from the fed funds rate," Kumar said.
