NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- E pluribus ... quattuor.

Ending months of speculation, the Interpublic Group on Tuesday announced details of a reorganization that will reconfigure its myriad ad, marketing and PR subsidiaries into four main operating divisions.

The limbs of the trimmed down octopus will consist of McCann-Erickson World Group, the FCB Group, the Advanced Marketing Services Group and an entity to be known as The Partnership.

In addition, Weber Shandwick and BSMG -- the latter acquired when Interpublic (IPG: news, msgs, alerts) swallowed True North Communications last month -- will be merged to form the world's largest public relations firm. The BSMG name will follow its former parent's moniker into retirement. The new PR giant will be called simply Weber Shandwick Worldwide.

"Five years ago our clients looked to us to provide marketing solutions that were driven primarily by advertising," explained CEO John Dooner. "Now, while advertising is still the major cornerstone in the global brand communications mix, clients also want us to offer more types of marketing services and communications expertise ..."

The McCann unit, which already consists of lead agency McCann-Erickson and a handful of niche shops, will be joined by former True North agencies Temerlin McClain and Bozell, along with Hill, Holliday and Avrett Free & Ginsberg.

The FCB group, led by True North's former flagship, will stand largely on its own while Advanced Marketing Services gets to run herd on the new PR giant, as well as Jack Morton Worldwide, NFO WorldGroup, Jack Morton Worldwide and a health-care marketing practice.

Finally, The Partnership will bring together Lowe Lintas & Partners, Draft Worldwide, Golin/Harris, Initiative Media, Carmichael Lynch and Deutsch, which Interpublic gobbled up late last year.

With combined revenue of over $7 billion, Interpublic vaulted over rivals Omnicom (OMC: news, msgs, alerts) and WPP (WPPGY: news, msgs, alerts) to become the world's largest ad agency holding group when it closed its acquisition of True North.

Although it quartered itself Tuesday, Wall Street has hanged and drawn Interpublic in grisly fashion this year. While shares closed down just 19 cents to $29.56 Tuesday, the company has been taking a serious beating since it warned of a profit shortfall (its second of the year) shortly before finalizing the True North deal. From a high of $47.44 in January, it gradually had slipped down into the mid $30s and then abruptly dived to its year-long low of $27 in late June.
