S+L deregulation was a Reagan priority which was also backed by Dixie Democrats like Jim Wright. It was first and foremost a GOP program, but the Dems couldn't use it as an issue because too many of their guys backed it too and more got suckered in my the soft money greed. The S+L decacle was also a direct result of soft money which ought to be illegal.
