Hitachi suspends operations at new chip plant

Hitachi Ltd. and Fujitsu Ltd. Friday confirmed in Tokyo that they each were cutting back chip production in response to the global semiconductor slump.

A Hitachi spokesman said a fab in Yamanishi, Japan, that makes microcontrollers for smart cards was being temporarily shut down and output was being cut at a second fab in Japan and a fab in Germany making similar devices. Together the cutbacks will reduce smart card MCU production 40% from the current 22 million chips a month.

The Yamanishi fab had only started in January and was in the process of ramping up to full production.

Separately, a Fujitsu spokesman said it was reducing flash memory output to cope with the current world oversupply. He declined to specify the scale of the production cutback. Fujitsu is considering temporarily shutting down some flash production lines, and also stretching out the planned start of flash production in a new fab slated to come on line in September.

Advanced Micro Devices is a joint venture partner with Fujitsu in taking up to 50% of the Japanese fab flash output to sell under the U.S. firm's name.
