Judging only from what I read in the American Rifleman, the primary conflict is over how best to defend the Second Amendment. As in any group with over four million members, there are factions. A few years ago the faction that wanted to diversity the NRA into conservation issues held sway. They were defeated, and the political power of the group is rightly concentrated on defending the Second Amendment. As you might imagine, most of us are more interested in shooting than in politics. As individuals, we tend to be introverted and as a rule poor communicators. But we know a good communicator when we see one, and we elected Charton Heston to an unprecedented fourth term. You should listen to him some time. With an open mind, of course.

The NRA has few peers as a political lobby group, because it keeps to its core values.

I remember a debate at the NRA on whether the FBI was really Jack Booted Nazis or only incompetent.
