Senate battle ground..........The biggest advantage for Democrats is the arithmetic of 2002: 20 Republican-held seats are at stake compared with 14 Democratic-held seats.

Also, more often than not, the president's party loses seats in midterm elections, and many of the Democratic incumbents are survivors of earlier GOP assaults. So far at least, all 14 of them intend to seek reelection, according to party officials. One Republican, Strom Thurmond (S.C.), will retire and there is some doubt about the plans of others, including Jesse Helms (N.C.) and Fred D. Thompson (Tenn.). Democrats also suggest possible retirements by Republicans Pete V. Domenici (N.M.) and Phil Gramm (Tex.), although their aides insist that they are running.
