i have to say though that my own experience with this type of lending (micro-lending to the extremely poor in third world countries), specifically in South Africa, has been a very positive one. in SA small loans of 2 - 300 Rand which people use to start small hawker's businesses, selling veggies and cigarettes on street corners get almost always paid back in full and on time and enable poor people to earn a livelihood. which is a lot better than having those very same poor people stab you and rob your money, also on street corners in South Africa.
