I agree with you. How do we determine when a species time has come or if it is right to preserve it? A guy came through Juneau a month or so ago talking about using a hair drier to thaw out a frozen mammoth he dug up from the permafrost. You may have seen him on the TV documentary "Raising the Mammoth."

Some people were asking about the possibility of recreating a mammoth from the DNA. Now there is a lamebrain idea for you. First of all, it wouldn't be a true mammoth, but an entirely new creature. Secondly, where do you get the habitat for such an animal? Thirdly, why? For what possible benefit? Save such antics for Jurassic Park type movies.

I believe that nature is almost always in balance for the conditions at the place and time. She heals herself in a very predictable pattern. I don't believe we should deliberately exterminate species or exterminate their habitat. But species that are unable to survive on earth --- their time has come and gone. Ours will too, someday.
