Message 16041121 If the Globalstar spectrum was used to enable terrestrial links in single mode single band Globalstar phones, would that significantly deplete the spectrum available for phone to satellite calls? My guess is that we'd end up with a complex calculation which could only be resolved by WackyWireless pricing methods. Meanwhile, Clark, like qveauriche, you missed the point. You are quite right that NZ operates in the same sort of way as the USA. So? But since you want some competition [I hasten to add that I realize this is just one silly little aspect among an infinite array, but just to help people understand that the USA is NOT numero uno in everything that matters], Kiwiland and Teroland are less corrupt than Uncle Sam's joint: nzherald.co.nz < New Zealand is the world's third least corrupt country, according to a survey by watchdog Transparency International. With an anti-corruption perception rating of 9.4 out of 10 in the 2001 survey, New Zealand's image as corruption-free was surpassed only by Finland (9.9) and Denmark (9.5). The index of perceived corruption levels across 91 countries was compiled from 14 surveys by seven independent organisations. New Zealand's rating was unchanged from last year, when it shared third place with Sweden, which dropped to sixth this year. New Zealand has remained in the top four places since the survey began in 1995 and was rated least corrupt country in 1995 and 1996 . Australia was placed 11th this year, up from 13th last year. At the bottom were Nigeria (1.0) and Bangladesh (0.4), although Transparency International said the Bangladesh rating was based on limited and contradictory data. The USA was rated only 3.1 > The point was that a self-referential system such as "even the government has to obey the law" when the government makes the law, is no recommendation. The NZ government has to obey the law too, but they sure as hell soon change it, or ignore it, when they feel slightly inconvenienced, same as the USA does. I'm sure you don't need a laundry list to demonstrate the point. Being 4 July, I suppose Americans get a temporary nationalistic brain spasm of self-reverential adulation and any negative comment about the most wonderful, uniquely god-favoured, greatest all-round perfect place on the planet causes road-rage. Having a stirring national anthem such as the Star Spangled Banner is quite a disadvantage. The NZ one is so pathetic that any hint of rabid, maniacal nationalism is squelched at the first notes and words - we have in recent years cunningly concealed the absurd lyrics by using the Maori language [which few understand]. It's probably just as well, because despite NZ's absurd national anthem, rabid nationalism and xenophobia is rampant enough here. With a decent national anthem, the place would go ape. Mqurice PS: I made the last sentence of that quote up myself [USA rated only 3.1] but I would not want you to think I am corrupt for doing so. And who said anything about pacifism? Did you know the cowardly USA didn't enter the second world war until Japan attacked them? My father was over there fighting Hitler at the beginning. NZ was the first country to declare war on Germany. You are naive about 'allies' in the real world. The way it really works is that you get 'helped' if it serves the powerful ally's purpose, whether you want to be helped or not and you do NOT get helped by your ally if it doesn't serve their purpose, again whether you like it or not. However, in the interests of avoiding thread pollution, how about continuing our war over at Write What You Like? Or we could discuss link budgets for Globalstar. Thanks for the rise. I love fishing [not that I do it much these days] and to hook you out of cyberspace was great. We miss you! It's great theorizing, but having people who actually know the facts about CDMA and stuff keeps us on the straight and narrow. Another little note on NZ life. Maoris used to eat fish and people they defeated in fighting, usually neighbouring tribes. Now they just eat the fish. There were very few living in the south island [too damn cold in a grass skirt thing]. It wasn't really genocidal because they mostly kept the women of defeated tribes. Genocidal is what Hitler tried with Jews. The cannibalism we have now is of the socialist variety, where high taxes are taken and given to those who vote for the government. I have noticed that little in life is perfect.
