'Summit to bring Amn-o-Aashti'

By our correspondent

KARACHI: Renowned Indian actor, a member of Parliament and a leader of the ruling party (BJP), Shatrughan Sinha expressed the hope the visit of President and Chief Executive, General Pervez Musharraf, to India will bring about a healthy change and substantially improve the relations between the two countries.

"The scheduled summit will strengthen ties between the two countries," he said in an interview. Sinha, who arrived Karachi Saturday night, said he was on a personal visit, yet he did not reject the possibility of meeting the President, saying though such a meeting was not scheduled, there was a possibility to call on the President.

He said a decision to meet the President could be finalised on reaching Lahore. He pointed out that he was going to meet his friends including political ones in Lahore and Islamabad. Sinha, who is by long odds a senior actor having worked in more than 250 films, suggested that the exchange of teams of players and cultural delegations could substantially strengthen and improve the diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Referring to his earlier visits to Pakistan in the past, Sinha said he always felt 'Apnaiat' in Pakistan as the people were very friendly and of good sense and disposition. Commenting on sports activities in the two countries, Sinha opined they must organise matches, not only cricket matches but games as well. He agreed to the suggestion that bookies had defamed the cricket players, but there were other reasons as well that caused bad effect to this effect.

Sinha who had been playing cricket (as a wicket keeper and off spinner) during his school days, said that he was also a good player of Table Tannins and Badminton. He maintained that the two countries could bring laurels in Hockey once again, provided the merit was honoured in the selection of players.

Paying glowing tributes to Pakistani cricketers and hockey players, Sinha said Pakistan has given world renowned players such as Hanif Muhammad, Imran Khan, Zaheer Abbas, Javed Miandad, Waseem Akram, Islahuddin, Samiullah, Hanif Khan and Hasan Sardar. However, he added, Jahangir Khan had impressed him very much. He further suggested the exchange of young players (school level) between the two countries.

He also stressed upon improvement of business and trade relations between the two countries. Commenting on the role of the people in the showbiz, he said artistes could play a great role in the improvement of ties.

Expressing his satisfaction over the recent steps, he said he (Sinha) had started a goodwill mission of 'Khair-sagali' some years back and now he was very happy that those initiatives were brining out some good results. He hoped that President Musharraf and Indian Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee would talk to each other open heartedly to promote the cause of 'Amno-Aashti' (peace).
